Or wanted, enemies after you, etc,You can only save "some" of the time. The rest of the time, you're at the mercy of a system that only likes to autosave once in a blue moon and much prefers you to lose hours of progress if you don't stick it out and get to the next checkpoint. It's bullshit. They need to save more or let you save manually.

What you do is go ahead and start it, and turn auto save off. You'll have to manually save the game on that particular file.
